Nigella Lawson, 59, shared that she likes to add banana skins for texture when making a warming winter curry on her latest programme Eat, Cook, Repeat. After baking a chocolate banana dessert in last night’s instalment, the TV chef saved the fruit’s skins ready to create an interesting spin on a classic Indian dish, which left viewers divided.

Nigella said on the programme: “I discovered that you can eat banana skins, now I admit, not totally visually appealing, but there’s something always so gratifying about using up every last scrap.

“All I do to get the banana skins ready for cooking is cover them in boiling water, add a bit of turmeric, a bit of salt and leave them to cool.

“These just go so velvety and swell, and soften with the flavour of the curry sauce,” she added.

However, some fans at home were unsure of the recipe, claiming it was like something from an I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Bushtucker Trial.

The TV chef recently admitted she struggles to understand what “balance” is, as she often films her programme all day for seven weeks, leaving little time for anything else.

The chef divulged that the process of creating her much loved cookery programmes is “very draining” as she is often on her feet all day.

Nigella explained: “I don’t know what this famed balance is! I love what I do, but everything [i.e. filming/ work] is interspersed with bits of solitude, so maybe that is my balance.

“The harder part is the filming. It’s physically very draining standing up all day for seven weeks or so, and there isn’t really room for anything else during that time.

“It’s a bit frightening and I always think, ‘I don’t know if I can do this again’, but then I start and I get excited again,” she added to the December issue of Good Housekeeping.

The chef turned 60 this year and said she never takes it for “granted” that she is still alive.

Her latest book Cook, Eat, Repeat was written during the recent lockdown and features lengthy essays on food and the pleasurable things in life.

Now she is filming recipes from the book alongside her “work family”, whom she has been in production with since the early 2000s.
