Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan

Solskjaer has been in charge of United ever since replacing Jose Mourinho in December 2018, with Phelan working as his assistant during that time.

The Red Devils appointed the pair installed with the belief they could guide the club back to the top of the Premier League table but, so far, that’s yet to happen.

United have endured a difficult start to the new season, losing against Istanbul Basaksehir, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Tottenham already.

That’s led to talk that Mauricio Pochettino could be about to rock up at Old Trafford as Solskjaer’s replacement, with the Argentine already sounded out about taking over.

And the Daily Mail say both Solskjaer and Phelan’s behaviour has changed behind the scenes at Carrington as speculation continues to rumble on.

With Solskjaer, it’s claimed the 47-year-old has become ‘withdrawn’ around the club as he battles to keep his job.

“At Manchester United there is more pressure than any club in the world. It comes with the job.

“We know what happens if you don’t win enough games.”

Solskjaer, however, has insisted he’s still got faith in this methods despite Pochettino being sounded out behind the scenes.

“Why shouldn’t I be?” he said.

“If I don’t trust my beliefs and values, my staff’s quality and the players’ quality, who else would?

“I have always had a very good, open and honest dialogue with the club, They have shown strong leadership, and good dialogue continually.

“Passion and fight, we’ll see that tomorrow. I’m a definite believer in these boys and they’ll come back and show how much they care.”

When asked how he coped with the pressure, he continued: “I’m good.

“You don’t have to be happy to stay positive, because you know that on difficult days, in life, there will be better ones coming, and I know these players well enough and I trust them well enough to give a response.

“You have to be mentally strong. There are demands on you as a Manchester United player and as manager, an expectation, because we are at the biggest and best club in the world.

“You don’t expect to find anything but criticism. It’s just how you deal with those setbacks and, from what I’ve seen from the boys, they’re ready to give a response.”
