Passenger vehicle sales rise for sixth straight month, up 11% in January

Passenger vehicle sales increased for the sixth straight month in January as pent-up demand, sustained preference for personal mobility drive up wholesale volumes.

According to data available with industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), as many as 276,554 passenger vehicles were sold last month, which is an increase of 11.14% over 248,840 units sold in the year-ago period.

The growth would have been even higher at 16% if we were to include sales of

which has stopped reporting data to SIAM on a monthly basis.

Sales of two-wheelers went up 6.63% in the month under review. While sales of scooters rose 9% to 454,315 units, those of motorcycles went up 5.1% to 916,365 units.

Demand for three-wheelers continued to remain muted and fell by 56.8% to 25,335 units in January.
