Peter Andre opens up on being bullied as a child

Peter Andre started his career as a teenager after winning an Australian TV talent competition called Hey, Hey It’s Saturday. He later became known for his single Mysterious Girl which has since sold more than two million copies worldwide. The dark-haired singer also became global heartthrob following the release of the song’s steamy music video, with women and girls around the world developing an instant crush on the star. But the now 47-year-old revealed in an exclusive interview toExpress.co.ukthat he wasn’t also so popular growing up.

He said: “The bullying I had as a kid was initially racism because I lived in Australia and at the time on the gold coast I think we were the only ethnic family that I remember and so you can imagine how much we stood out.

“All these beautiful blonde hair blue eyed Australians they looked like they were on the cover of magazines and here I was this curly hair Greek kid with an English accent – it didn’t go down too well.

“That racism then just turned into bullying, you know it wasn’t about your nationality, it was just because you were different.”

Peter added the comments made towards him have stayed with him, saying: “I am now 47, so 35 years later, I am still scarred by that bullying.

“They used to look at my curly hair and call me certain names and even now to this day, I don’t wear my hair curly.

“It’s very rare for me to have my hair curly out in public, and that’s because I see what those kids used to call me that’s how bad you can be scarred from bullying.”

With cyberbullying becoming more prevalent online, Peter explained: “Cyberbullying is different because you can get to the point where you believe what you’re seeing.

“Written down, you believe what they are saying you are because you can’t see their eye contact and because it is in black and white it must be true.

“But what was important for me was that because it was winter all the other illnesses that are rife this time of year added with Covid and was a big problem.

“I think we are finally seeing a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.”

Peter spoke to Express.co.uk as he partners up with cybersecurity specialists Panda Security on a campaign to keep kids safe online this winter.
