Phillip Schofield: This Morning host details how wife's parents reacted to him coming out

Phillip Schofield, 58, spoke on the Chris Evans podcast How To Wow as he revealed his in-laws had been “amazing” at accepting the news. The This Morning host told his wife Stephanie Lowe’s parents just before Christmas that he was gay, as he cleaned the kitchen in preparation for a family meal.
Phillip revealed: “But just before Christmas, well during Christmas, I was cleaning – I clean, when I’m stressed, I tidy up – so I was cleaning a surface at Christmas, wiping it down and Jill, my wonderful mother-in-law, said, ‘You are the perfect man, you know’.
“And I just said, ‘No Jill, no I’m not’, but it was the sweetest thing to say. So yeah, big support from them.”
Chris then read out a text message Phillip received from his father-in-law John, which said: “I may be your pa-in-law but think of me as your surrogate pa, and long may it continue… As long as Steph’s OK we don’t have a problem.”
Revealing Phillip’s response to the message, Chris added: “Then you text him back, ‘Thank you so much, Captain, I’m so very deeply sorry to disappoint you.'”

Phillip, whose weight had dropped to just nine stone before he came out, told Ryan: “I had long conversations with Steph, we talked about it a lot. It was really beginning to trip me up, mess with my head.
“It started off with a little bit of confusion, then my head managed to turn it into something really big, scary and dark. Steph and I went through that together.”
He added: “Then when I had made the decision, the only way I think I could save myself because it got that dark was that I had to be honest. I had to be truthful.
“Then when you’ve decided to make that decision you have to be honest and truthful with the people who are around you.”
Phillip divulged his driver had taken him to Cornwall so he could speak with his mother face to face.
The ITV presenter continued: “She had already asked me months before, ‘Are you OK? You look skinny… you look sad, I know there’s something wrong’. I said, ‘I’ll tell you when the time is right, but I’m not ill’.”
Phillip then explained his mother was worried he was going blind after he had previously informed her of “annoying floaters” in his eyes.
He continued: “I said, ‘Mum, I have something to tell you’’ so I told her and she said, ‘Oh, oh right OK, thank God for that, I thought you were going blind. Those things in your eyes, that’s alright, so long as you are ok and Steph’s ok and the girls are OK. I’m fine!’”
