PIP: Britons may get thousands in back payments after DWP changes rules

PIP is formally known as Personal Independence Payments, allowing Britons to gain support for specific conditions. The benefit is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to help the hundreds of thousands of people who are entitled. PIP, at its core, is intended to help those with a long term health condition or disability.
Payments vary depending on how the condition affects an individual, rather than the condition itself.
However, there is now to be a review of claimants after a recent change in the law.
The change is as a result of a Supreme Court decision which took place in July, relating to how much people on PIP are paid.
The decision found people with certain mental health conditions, who need help to interact with others, were not being aware the correct amount of points.

It is not yet clear how the DWP will identify those who are entitled to a back payment.
As such, individuals should keep an eye out on the matter, but the government department has assured there will be updates in due course.
Meanwhile, it is equally important to understand how much people are entitled to through standard PIP payments.
These vary, depending on the severity of how a person’s condition affects their day-to-day lives.
To be eligible to receive PIP, there are a number of criteria to bear in mind.
Individuals must be aged 16 or over, but usually have not reached state pension age to claim.
The health condition or disability a person has must have also created difficulties for them with daily living or mobility for at least three months.
People must expect these difficulties to continue for at least the next nine months in order to be entitled.
