PIP: Britons will need to fill out a claim form - full details explained

PIP is designed to help people with some of the extra costs associated with their condition. The amount a person receives is ultimately dependent on how their condition affects them, rather than the condition itself. For this reason, then, it is important Britons are forthcoming with how their daily lives are impacted by their disability or long term ill-health.

Question 9 has a focus on communication, Question 10 on reading and Question 11 is on the topic of mixing with other people.

Subsequent questions revolve around the ability to manage money, getting out and about, and moving around.

Finally, Question 15 provides Britons with more ability to explain their condition if necessary.

It is a blank page which can be used for claimants to provide any additional information they believe is necessary.

Citizens Advice has provided guidance on how this kind of space can be used.

While there is no right or wrong answer, the organisation has stated claimants may wish to consider and relay the following matters:

  • If someone had to fill in the form for the claimant and why
  • If the claimant filled in the form slowly or with any pain
  • If filling in the form caused the claimant anxiety or stress
  • If any medical evidence to support the claim is being attached

In addition, comments from other people such as health professionals, carers, friends or family can also be added in here, if it is believed this could help a PIP application.

PIP is split into two key parts – the daily living part and the mobility part.

The aforementioned questions help the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) determine what part Britons should receive, or if they should receive both.

The weekly rate for the daily living part stands at either £59.70 or £89.15, and for the mobility element, the weekly rate is either £23.60 or £62.25.

Britons must complete the PIP form and send it bak to the DWP within 28 days.

They should contact the PIP enquiry line if they need more time to fill the form in.

This is particularly important as failing to send the form back in time could mean a claim is refused.

After a claim is processed, claimants will receive a letter which tells them whether or not they will receive PIP.

If accepted, people will be told how much they can expect to receive and when they will be paid.

In addition, they will also be told when their PIP will be reviewed, which the government states will ensure people receive the correct support.

If someone disagrees with a decision made, they are also able to challenge this in a process known as ‘mandatory reconsideration’.
