PS5 beats PS4 to key sales milestone – despite stock shortages

The PS5 has beaten the PS4 to a major sales milestone. As revealed in a post by VGChartz, the PS5 is estimated to have sold over 10million consoles since launching last November. The PS5 hit this sales landmark at a quicker rate than the PS4.

The PS5 is estimated to have sold 10million units within 35 weeks.

This is compared to the PS4 which hit the 10million market after 39 weeks.

The PS4 is the second best selling of console of all time, selling 115.9million units at last count.

The PS5 outpacing the PS4, at this early stage of the ninth console generation, bodes very well for Sony.

The PS5 is also the first next-gen console to hit the 10million marker.

According to VGChartz, the Xbox Series X and S is estimated to have sold 5.93million units since launching last November.

Speaking about these figures, VGChartz’s William D’Angelo posted on Twitter: “It has taken the PS5 35 weeks to sell 10 million units, while it took the PS4 39 weeks to reach the same milestone.

“The Xbox Series X|S should easily surpass 6 million units sold for the week ending July 17 estimates.”

The good news doesn’t stop there for Sony as well.

According to VGChartz, for the week July 4 to July 10 the PS5 managed to sell double what the Xbox Series X and S sold.

Worldwide the PS5 is estimated to have sold 235,907 consoles, compared to the Xbox Series X and S’s 116,412.

The Switch is the number one selling console worldwide, and is estimated to have sold 359,529 during the week between July 4 to 10.

However, the Switch is consistently in stock – whereas the PS5 and Xbox Series X restocks are few and far between, with stock getting snapped up in lightning fast speeds.

Despite the Switch reportedly selling more than the PS5 worldwide, in Europe at least the PS5 is estimated to have sold more than the Switch for the week leading up to July 10.

According to VGChartz, in Europe that week the PS5 was the region’s number one console – selling 108,620 consoles. This is compared to the Switch’s 108,452.

In other regions, the Switch was the number one country for the week leading to July 10, but the PS5 was in second place in each of these regions – ahead of the Xbox Series X and S.

The other regions that the PS5 outsold the Xbox Series X and S for July 4 to July 10 was the Americas, Asia and Oceania.
