Ronnie O'Sullivan’s plan to ‘live with Buddhist monks’ as Rocket shortlisted for BBC SPOTY

Ronnie O'Sullivan’s plan to ‘live with Buddhist monks’ as Rocket shortlisted for BBC SPOTY

Never one to shy away from controversy, O’Sullivan is known for his unpredictable temperament and outspoken views. Despite being the most decorated player in the history of snooker, the 45-year-old has landed himself in hot water numerous times for sharing a piece of his mind and losing his cool. But he once conjured up a plan to cut out his legendary rages – by learning from the experts in mindfulness.

O’Sullivan tweeted: “I’m going to do three months in Thailand living with the Buddhist monks.”

After fans questioned the move, the snooker ace confirmed he was “totally serious,” adding that “it’s always important to have an open heart, no matter what”.

He continued: “I know it’s tough, but [a] life lived from the heart feels much better than a life ruled by the head.”

Buddhists focus on spiritual development through meditation in order to reach Nirvana – a place of peace and happiness.

O’Sullivan added in 2018: “The reason I think Tiger Woods is so good is because of his roots in Buddhism.”

Religion seems to have played a key part in O’Sullivan’s stellar career.

In 2016, he claimed God had told him to give up snooker, but he had “put that on the back burner for now”.

And his belief in himself appears to have paid off, with O’Sullivan looking back to his best.

After winning the World Championship for the sixth time this year, O’Sullivan said it was a “great honour” to have his name put forward for SPOTY.

“But for me, Tyson Fury is the standout.

“It’s the gladiator sport and he is the real Rocky. He’s a proper fighter’s fighter and he’s the superstar for me.”

Voting will be open to the public during the Sports Personality programme on BBC One on Sunday, December 20.

Football pundit Alex Scott will join the presenting line-up alongside Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan to look back on those that have stood out during what has been a tough year.

Other awards to be announced include Team and Coach of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year and Unsung Hero.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will also receive a special award in recognition of his work to raise awareness of child food poverty in the UK.
