Signed from Nottingham Forest in August 1988, the former Everton player went on to achieve the distinction of being the Hornets’ top scorer for three consecutive seasons – and he went on to repeat the feat at Middlesbrough.
Wilkinson found the back of the net 55 times in 159 appearances in all competitions at Vicarage Road – including a subsequent loan spell – but he is perhaps not better remembered by more supporters because there was nothing particularly eye-catching about his game apart from flick-ons and scoring goals.
