The Elton John costume in the colours of Watford FC
The Watford Observer has teamed up with Watford Museum and its curator Sarah Priestley to take a journey back to the town’s past through items or places of historical significance.
Number 47 in our ‘history of Watford in 50 objects’ is certainly the most flamboyant yet – the museum’s Elton John stage costume.
Sarah said: “This was made for Elton in 1984, the year Watford got to the FA Cup Final. Elton was known for his live performances and amazing stage costumes, and this one is an absolute joy with Watford FC colours, quilting, sequins, fringing and football shoulder pads!
“Sir Elton John’s love affair with Watford FC is now the stuff of legend… how he arrived as the new chairman in 1976 and recruited Graham Taylor the following year.
‘Elton John’s Taylor Made Army’ reached heights never before experienced at Watford FC, on and off the pitch. The Cup Final, top-flight football, Europe and of the start of the inclusive family club that we know and love today.
“Of course the relationship has changed over the years, just like Elton’s stage outfits, but now it’s lovely to see Elton the family man bringing his children to matches.”
