Thousands due a Cold Weather Payment – check if your postcode has been triggered

Cold Weather Payments could be a lifeline to Britons who rely on Universal Credit and Pension Credit.

Payments are made by the DWP during November 1 and March 31 to help those on a low income meet higher heating costs.

To benefit from a Cold Weather Payment of £25, people will need to live in an area that has seen the temperature drop, or has been forecast to drop, to zero for seven consecutive days.

Last week the DWP confirmed that 13,000 payments had been triggered and published a full list of the areas who could expect an extra £25.

Millions of people who are claiming Universal Credit or Pension Credit will be eligible for the extra £25 as long as their area has been cold enough.

The financial help is available to those on Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance or Support for Mortgage Interest.

Britons who are claiming state benefits should receive the payment automatically.

However, people are encouraged to speak to their local jobcentre if they think they have been missed out in error.

Anyone on Pension Credit should also have received a Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300 by now.

Other Britons could be entitled to £140 as part of the Warm Homes Discount Scheme which is deducted from their energy bill by their energy supplier.

It’s advisable for people to check they are receiving all the benefits they are entitled to as £15billion is unclaimed every year.

There’s a handy benefits calculator on the Government website where people can quickly work out whether it’s worth investigating further.
