Japan’s dominance in Judo is quite evident on the world stage, but some other countries have also produced dynamic champions. One such country is France, which has produced one of the greatest judokas of all time – double Olympic champion Teddy Riner.
The 32 year old, who competes in the +100kg category, will be the cynosure of all judo fans’ eyes at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8.
Having won the bronze in 2008 Beijing, Riner upped the ante in his next two Olympic appearances, winning back-to-back gold medals in 2012 London and 2016 Rio Games in the +100kg event. The 6-foot-8 inch tall French heavyweight Riner will now attempt to win a medal in his fourth successive Olympic appearance.
Riner, a 10 time world champion, the first and only judoka to achieve that feat, will also look to equal Japan’s judo great Tadahiro Nomura’s Olympic record of three consecutive gold medals.
The 32-year-old French heavyweight’s dominance in the past decade speaks for itself. He was undefeated in 154 consecutive matches from September 2010 to February 2020, before he lost twice last year, including a surprise defeat by Japan’s Kokoro Kageura in the Paris Grand Slam. His competitors now see him as someone who can be beaten. But Riner, will be perhaps the biggest favourite to win the gold in Tokyo, just going by what his record has been over the last decade.
Going into the Tokyo Games, Riner, who is nicknamed Teddy Bear and Big Teddy, will be one big gold medal contender to watch out for.
