Tottenham chief Fabio Paratici’s Gennaro Gattuso ‘phone call’ as pressure mounts on Nuno

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has come under renewed pressure after his side fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United on Saturday. The Red Devils had been on their own torrid run of form, and the nature of the loss is likely to prompt serious questions about where Spurs go from here as Fabio Paratici’s links with Gennaro Gattuso threaten to resurface.

Nuno broadly failed to deal with United’s unfamiliar five-at-the-back formation on Saturday afternoon.

After Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in style, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani added gloss to the score-line as Spurs failed to mount a response.

The struggles of their talisman, Harry Kane, were also in full view as the England captain looked a shadow of his former self.

With Nuno under increasing pressure, Spurs chief Paratici may have to revisit the connections he made during the summer’s chaotic manager hunt.

Given how broad Tottenham’s manager hunt was during the summer, Paratici should not have to scroll too far down in his phone book to pick out several top candidates.

Gattuso was a top player in his day, and he can now boast managerial stints with the likes of AC Milan and Napoli.

With fixtures on the horizon against Everton and Leeds, it remains to be seen whether Paratici will pull the trigger at this early stage of the season.

“We have to improve all of us,” said Nuno after the game.

“It’s not about individuals. As a team we must do much better.

“It’s not only our offensive game. We are vulnerable in defence, we concede.

“We keep the ball, yes, but we had ten shots, none on goal. We have to be more accurate.

“The final pass is not always the right line. It’s behind or in front. We have to improve, do much better. It sounds absurd but the only solution is we try to stick together and work together.”
