Vertagear Apologizes for Posting Sexist Tweet

Gaming chair and accessory maker, Vertagear, has apologized for a sexist tweet that was published on its official Twitter account yesterday.

The tweet in question can be seen here (it’s the first screenshot) and while it was deleted shortly after it went up, it had already drawn criticism. Vertagear responded today with a statement about the tweet, citing how “discrimination and bias are the opposite” of what they want to create for its community.

The statement seems to be specifically and exclusively about the tweet posted on July 18. However, the company has a history of sexist and ableist tweets which this statement fails to address.

As Laura Hirsbrunner points out on Twitter, yesterday’s tweet was not the first tweet to lean on this brand of humor from the gaming accessory manufacturer.

Four discriminatory tweets are already four more than any company should make, but Hirsbrunner discovered at least seven more.

Twitter user Xironium also pointed out another past tweet that shows Vertagear using an offensive term typically used against those with disabilities.

The statement Vertagear released today doesn’t address any of the company’s other hurtful tweets, like the ones shown above, but it does say that “measures have been taken and a clearer and more defined guideline has been created to help us make sure that similar incidents won’t happen in the future.”

That’s great for the company’s future, but what of its past? The statement says Vertagear is looking for “constructive feedback on how we can improve” and many people have already posted the company’s other offensive tweets in response. Perhaps that will lead to the company acknowledging its other offensive tweets.
