Where was ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ filmed?

For Bridgerton fans growing impatient for the forthcoming Season 3 (and the confirmed Season 4 too), there’s more high-society intrigue and romance on its way. In her infinite generosity, Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes has readied a spin-off prequel, delving deep into the past of stand-out character Queen Charlotte. And, although there’s no official release date as yet, there’s more good news: it’s not far off, rumoured to be coming in late Spring.

While Rhimes admits the idea came from Netflix chief Ted Sarandos, she leapt at the chance to give Charlotte the backstory she deserved: “I’m very obsessed with Queen Charlotte,” she told Variety magazine, “I always call her the Beyoncé of the show.” The show will take us back to the queen’s first meeting with her husband, George III, and into their early marriage, taking the story beyond the realm of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton source novels, which didn’t feature Charlotte (a tie-in book, co-authored by Rhimes and Quinn, will be released with the series). Along the way, we’ll see how Charlotte changed the British court, creating the “ton” that forms the background of the Bridgerton universe.

Starring as the young queen will be India Amarteifio, previously seen in Line of Duty and Sex Education, with Corey Mylchreest as George and Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones) as his mother, the Dowager Princess Augusta. We’ll also see young versions of Violet Bridgerton (as Violet Ledger), played by Connie Jenkins-Greig, and Lady Danbury, played by Arsema Thomas, as we find out how the characters became the powerful women we know. Alongside these will be scenes set in the familiar Bridgerton timescale featuring other familiar actors, with Charlotte played by Golda Rosheuvel, Violet by Ruth Gemmell and Lady Danbury by Adjoa Andoh.

The first scenes for the spin-off were filmed in London featuring the older-generation actors, when Golda Rosheuvel’s Charlotte, with her aide Brimsley (Hugh Sachs), were spotted shooting a funeral scene. Details are still under wraps, with the making of the series kept under the same layer of secrecy as Bridgerton – including the use of codenames at filming locations. We’ll update this piece when more is revealed, but this is what we know about the locations so far.
