Actress and Comedian Patti Harrison on Her New Movie ‘Together Together,’ Conquering Onscreen Anxiety, and Her Daily Bagel

There is, quite possibly, nobody funnier than Patti Harrison. If you disagree, you’ve obviously never seen her do stand-up, or steal scenes in Shrill, I Think You Should Leave, High Maintenance or a host of other shows. But Harrison’s latest lead role is a bit of a departure from form; in Nikole Beckwith’s new platonic rom-com Together Together, she plays Anna, a slightly confused, 26-year-old loner who agrees to act as a surrogate for single dad-to-be Matt (Ed Helms). Harrison is delightful in the film, balancing her natural comedic timing with surprising restraint; and recently, Vogue spoke to her about the film, participating in a virtual Sundance Film Festival, and representation of marginalized communities onscreen.

Vogue: What was the experience of virtual-Sundance like?

Harrison: It was very strange and very overwhelming. I definitely was not mentally prepared for what to expect; I thought I was, and then when the time came for our premiere, I immediately became engulfed in all this anxiety. In terms of the digital reorientation of the festival, I’ve never been before, so I don’t have anything to really compare it to, but it was interesting to see everyone experiencing it in the same way in real time. I was able to send passes to my family, which was really cool, and not something that would happen in the physical world, out of lockdown. That felt really special, because I didn’t think my family would get to see the movie for a really long time, and they are being so, so nice and supportive. They know I’m super nervous and self-conscious about it, because I haven’t been this involved in a movie. I was in A Simple Favor

I definitely I think I’m a little behind on processing what’s going on, but I’m so happy that some people got to see it. It’s really cool to read feedback. I’m trying not to engage too much, though, because I spiral out even if the reviews are, like…positive.
