Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck first met on the set of Gigli, while Lopez was still married to her second husband. A few months later, during the summer of 2002, the two were spotted kissing at Lopez’s 32nd birthday party, and by November of 2002, Affleck was starring in the music video for “Jenny from the Block” and the two were engaged.
They dated for one more year—they were supposed to marry in September 2003, but called it off due to “excessive media attention”—and by January 2004, they were broken up.
Lopez and Affleck went their separate ways, married, and had children (Affleck shares three kids with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, Lopez has twins with ex-husband Marc Anthony) before reuniting in April 2021 after Lopez split from Alex Rodriguez.
“It’s natural between them, and the chemistry is unreal,” a Lopez source told E! at the time. “They picked up where they last left off and are enjoying each other’s company right now.”
Soon, the two were spotted by paparazzi, and made their red carpet (re)debut in September 2021. Lopez told People that the growth they’ve been through is key to making their new relationship work: “We’re older now, we’re smarter, we have more experience, we’re at different places in our lives, we have kids now, and we have to be very conscious of those things.” For his part, Affleck is grateful for his “second chance,” he told WSJ Magazine.
In April 2022, they announced their engagement—Affleck proposed to Lopez while she was in the bubble bath with a green diamond engagement ring—and by July, they were married! “Love is beautiful. Love is kind,” Lopez wrote, sharing the news of their wedding. “And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient.”
