‘Batwoman’ Fans, You Actually Won’t Get to See Jacob in Season 3

Batwoman will embark on a new era when it returns later this fall for season 3. Unfortunately, the CW superhero drama has said a quiet goodbye to a pivotal character, though — former commander Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott).

Since the show’s premiere in 2019, Dougray Scott’s character has been front and center as the father of Kate (Ruby Rose, Wallis Day), Mary (Nicole Kang) and Alice (Rachel Skarsten). Despite Jacob’s best efforts to mobilize his private security agency to protect the citizens of Gotham City, he realized in the end it was doing more harm than good. Two weeks before the Batwoman season 2 finale, viewers saw him disband the group after he learned about its internal corruption. Shortly after, Jacob found himself in handcuffs after trying to help Alice.

Following the thrilling episode, which concluded with him being transferred to Metropolis to await trial, fans were excited to see what would become of him. “I honestly wasn’t expecting Jacob to do what he did. Surprised me, good job. 👏 Now, I gotta wonder what’s next for the former commander? 👀,” one person wrote on Instagram. “I wonder what Jacob will be doing in season 3 now that there is no crows 🤔,” another added. “I look forward to seeing what Jacob plans to do from here,” a different fan said.

Sadly, on Sunday night, only moments after the East Coast finished Batwoman season 2, showrunner Caroline Dries announced that Jacob and the actor’s time had come to an end.

“Having Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane on Batwoman was incredibly special for all of us,” she said in a statement. “An actor with his pedigree and reputation elevates any project, and he had great chemistry with his castmates. We loved telling Commander Kane’s story for the last two seasons, and we will always leave the door open to have him return. We wish him the very best!”

Why did Jacob Kane (a.k.a. Dougray Scott) leave Batwoman?

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the creator shared more insight about why writers decided on this fate. Among the reasons was the end of the Crows and the departure of actress Wallis Day’s character, Kate, from Gotham and the show.

“The character [Jacob] obviously had a really intense story line. The story was just lending itself of wrapping up the Crows,” Caroline told the outlet. “Once we kind of made that decision — and obviously Kate isn’t staying on the show — this character of Jacob had sort of run its course, for better or for worse, through that story line. So it worked out that it was mutual [with Dougray].

She continued: “We ended up being able to really write a good ending for Jacob, just kind of knowing in advance that’s what we were going to do. I’m very pleased with how that story line worked out for him. It allowed us to give Dougray some really rich stuff toward the end.”

The 55-year-old actor has yet to speak out about leaving Batwoman, but according to his IMDB, he’s already got other projects in the works. The Scottish actor is set to star in several different movies, including Judy, a story about a runaway pup in WWII.
