Curated by Marcella Manni, Yelena Yemchuk’s solo exhibition brings together two series of works, a recent one (finalized in the publication УYY, Depart Pour L’image, 2022) and Ten Years After (2006) born from the collaboration with Antonio Marras.

Characters are all the strange protagonists that shape and characterize the artist’s imagination and that invade her representations which include paintings, costumes and set staging. Creating a break between disciplined boundaries, the works presented are constructed, fragment by fragment, as a surreal and enigmatic narrative.

Different creatures are presented, as in a film montage: soldiers, dancers, brides, pin-ups, sailors, men dressed up as bears, little girls with braids, cats and fish… these are just some of the protagonists of the surreal stories that Yemchuk, silent but attentive observer, tells us. The common element that manages to inscribe each character in the same great novel is the strangeness and mystery that naturally encodes the artist’s projects: photography, like drawing, are the languages by which it is possible to create a bridge with the ordinary reality, with the aim to twist it and give it a dreamlike and fantastic shade. By enriching itself with theatrical details and gestures, everyday life rediscovers a new guise, transforming itself into an animated vision.

David Lynch describes his creative process as a constant risk of falling in love with an idea and diving deep into the vortex that it brings with it. Yemchuk seems to overlap to this attitude, and in her fall, as a blind lover, she brings with her the characters she meets along the way: the subjects are thus portrayed, discovered, and investigated for their ability to allude to another world, the imagined and imaginary one of the artist.

The kaleidoscopic constellation of the characters, however, seems to be held together by an invisible thread that unites, connects and composes in sequences and atmospheres that meet again: the women and men who move in the Sardinia of Ten Years After dance the same magical dance of the characters, almost improvisational actors, of УYY.

Characters involves the observer to guide him in these places and atmospheres, veiled by memory. Yemchuk’s gaze, poetic, full of nostalgia and affection, takes us back to a dimension of childhood and freedom

The exhibition is promoted by Metronom in collaboration with NonostanteMarras and Depart pour L’image.
