Cheapest supermarket for Christmas food shop - Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s costs ranked

Christmas food favourites including turkey and Yorkshire puddings are available at most major UK supermarkets every year, so it can be hard to know which food store offers the best value groceries. New research from Which? shows which retailer is the most affordable.

The research collected prices from five of the UK’s biggest supermarkets including Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose to find out which retailer was the most affordable.

For a trolley full of 15 food items, Which? started tracking prices at the Start of December.

Food items including a medium turkey crown, Brussels sprouts and red cabbage were all tracked at the supermarket giants.

Other staples on the shopping list included parsnips, carrots, Yorkshire puddings and cranberry sauce.

This is the third year running that Asda has been found to be the cheapest supermarket to pick up Christmas food.

Which? said: “Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have consistently occupied the middle ground over the past three years and, while they’ve shuffled around in the rankings, the most that has ever separated the priciest from the cheapest has been £3.26, which happened this year.”

Discount retailers Aldi and Lidl were not included in the research because they don’t stock the same range of items, however Aldi and Lidl are said to stock the cheapest turkeys this year.

Natalie Hitchins, head of home products and services at Which?, said: “Whether you’re gearing up for your annual Christmas supermarket sweep, or you’re ready to book an in-store collection slot, our elves have crunched the numbers and found big differences between the cost of yuletide foods, across the supermarkets.

“While price might not be everything, with a tough year behind us many shoppers will want to make sure they are getting a good deal on their Christmas food, so it’s good to know that a sackful of turkey and all the trimmings could cost you less than £40.”

Each month, Which? tracks supermarket prices to determine which store has the most affordable food.

In November, Aldi was the cheapest supermarket for groceries with a trolley of 22 items costing on average, £21.28.

Grocery prices tracked included products like apples, eggs and tomatoes.

This narrowly beat discount retailer rival Lidl, where customers would have paid just 88p more.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “We know this Christmas is likely to be difficult for many families and so we are incredibly proud to consistently provide our customers with the best value groceries in the UK.

“We’re delighted that Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in not one but two independent price surveys.

“It is possible to make savings without compromising on quality; this is why millions of Brits continue to choose Aldi to do their weekly shop, and it’s why we’ll ensure we keep providing the best quality products at the best possible prices.”
