Cher Reveals the Full Story of What Her Relationship With Val Kilmer Was Really Like
It’s a well-known fact that the legendary performer Cher once dated Hollywood icon Val Kilmer. But while red carpet pictures of the two may have been everywhere back in the 1980s, it’s not until now that we’re getting a glimpse into what their relationship was actually like.
In a recent issue of People, the 75-year-old “I Got You Babe” singer bared all about their time together after she had split from both of her husbands — Gregg Allman and Sonny Bono — and before the 61-year-old Top Gun star went on to marry his now-ex wife, Joanne Whalley.
As it turns out, Cher and Val were introduced at Cher’s birthday party — and from there, a loving relationship blossomed. “We became friends because we laughed at the same things constantly. He would sleep over and it was just a friendship [at first.] That took a long time. Well, I guess not really a long time,” she shared in the magazine.
In the article, Cher also addressed their 14-year age gap. “He was so young. Was he 22? What was I? I don’t know. Thirty something. It was a bigger deal back then,” she recalled. “The truth was if I hadn’t gone out with younger men, I would have never had a date. Younger men weren’t intimidated by older women. But older men in my age category, they weren’t having it.”
Cher went on to explain how good Val was with her kids, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman, and how one New Year’s Eve they stayed in, he bought a bunch of art supplies and spent the entire evening creating artwork with the family.
“We had unbelievable times and then put up with some times when they weren’t [that way] because we were both Alpha males. We were both individuals and neither of us was going to give up on that,” she explained.
Cher even talked about Val being ill, one year after Val himself opened up in his memoir I’m Your Huckleberry about staying in Cher’s guest house while his health was declining. The actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, a journey he details in his newly released Amazon Prime Video documentary, Val. He is now cancer-free.
“He was at my house a lot of the time he was sick. He was brave the whole time. I saw how sick he was. Once when the paramedics showed up after he was so sick and coughing up blood, he looked at me and I looked at him and we both knew what we were thinking,” she remembered. “Because those guys are so handsome. When one of those paramedics comes to your house, you just know you’re going to see somebody who’s really cute.”
As for his documentary, Cher couldn’t have had nicer things to say about the film and Val’s effort on it.
“He is so creative like nobody I’ve ever known and how brave he was to do it in the way that he did it,” she gushed. “He’s an artist. He can be a brat too but you forgive him. You forgive him everything. Even when I was angry, it was still a joy. If he called, it wouldn’t matter where I was, I would go.”
