Gary Lineker is BBC’s highest-paid employee – Euro 2020 pundit’s fortune unveiled

Gary Lineker will present the BBC’s coverage of the Euro 2020 final tonight. England and Italy will go head-to-head at Wembley Stadium in what promises to be a thrilling game of football.

Gary was born in Leicester in 1960 and has a younger brother, Wayne.

The two boys played football together growing up and Gary played for Aylestone Park Youth, later becoming the club’s president.

After leaving school with only four O Levels, Gary joined the youth academy at Leicester City in 1976.

He played for his hometown club until 1985, after having scored 24 goals for the team while they were in the First Division from 1984 to 1985.

In 1985, Everton signed Gary for £800,00, and the football legend scored 40 goals in just 57 games within his first season at the club.

Gary reached the FA Cup final with Everton, but they missed out on the trophy, losing 3-1 to Liverpool.

Gary’s stint at Everton was short, as the talented footballer moved to Barcelona in 1986.

He scored 21 goals in 41 games during his first season at the club, including a hat-trick in a 3-2 win over rivals Real Madrid.

Barcelona went on to win the Copa del Rey in 1988 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1989.

In 1989, Gary signed for Tottenham Hotspur for £1.1million.

Over three seasons, he scored 67 goals in 105 league games and won the 1991 FA Cup Final with the team.

Gary’s last club before his retirement in 1994 was Nagoya Grampus, for whom he signed in 1993.

The former footballer also played for the English national team, becoming the first English player to win the Golden Boot at the end of the 1986 World Cup, and scoring two goals in the quarter-final of the 1990 World Cup against Cameroon.

After retiring from professional football, Gary worked for BBC Radio Five Live as a football pundit before becoming the BBC’s anchorman for football coverage.

He presented They Think It’s All Over and Grandstand, as well as Match of the Day.

Gary was married to Michelle Cockayne from 1986 to 2006, and the couple have four sons.

Interestingly, Gary speaks Spanish and is an advocate for the teaching of foreign languages in British schools.
