Google Maps: Mysterious abandoned plane spotted in desert - could it be MH370?

Google Maps is a great tool for discovering weird and wonderful sites around the world. However, it also leaves users keen to understand more about particular global incidents, such as an “intriguing” aeroplane spotted alone in the Libyan desert.

The image was spotted using Google’s satellite imagery which captures a birds-eye view of the Earth.

In the picture, a white aircraft can be seen sitting alone on the golden sands of the desert airstrip at Wadi Bu al Hashm in Libya.

The heat and brightness of the sun leave the abandoned aircraft glowing, making it even easier to spot in the bizarre location.

Furthermore, a Google Earth photograph submitted by another user shows the inside of the abandoned aircraft.

What’s more, it seems savvy Reddit users have managed to uncover the history of this abandoned vehicle.

Many users pointed out although the aircraft appeared to have crashed, the fact it was still mostly intact suggested it had been left behind on purpose or had been damaged thus unable to fly.

Indeed, after some digging, a Reddit user believes they have discovered the story behind the eye-catching aeroplane.

“Damaged beyond repair in a landing accident at the desert airstrip of Wadi Bu al Hashm, Libya, photographic evidence shows the main undercarriage collapsed with damage to the propeller tips,” stated the user.

“The first photographic evidence emerged on October 6, 2008, so the accident must have happened before that date.”

They add: “1992 Libya. Yasir Arafat’s An-26 crashed on 8 April 1992 during a sandstorm. Of the 13 on board, both pilots and an engineer were killed.”

The plane is thought to be on a landing strip due to the fact it ran into danger during an attempted emergency landing as the result of a sand storm.

This is not the first time an aircraft has caught the attention of users.

Eagle-eyed viewers have often shard images in the past which they suggest could be the missing MH370 flight.

One user spotted an aircraft flying above a Cambodian forest which they believe could be the plane.

However, their theory was shot down by others who suggest there is too much evidence stacked against this being the crash site.

The Google Maps theory also falls apart considering the bits and pieces of potential MH370 debris found on beaches throughout the region, suggesting MH370 drowned in the ocean.
