It’s Official: ‘Firefly Lane’ Has Been Renewed for Season 2
- Season 1 of Firefly Lane dropped on Netflix on Wednesday, February 3.
- The show, which stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, has been compared to other Netflix successes, Sweet Magnolias and Virgin River.
- A few months after the first season aired, Netflix confirmed that the show would be returning for season 2.
Netflix knows the power that a feel-good show holds. In the last year alone, they’ve taken us to Serenity (Sweet Magnolias), the streets of Paris (Emily in Paris) and to a quaint California town (Virgin River). One of their latest offerings: Firefly Lane, a series that follows Kate and Tully, played by Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl respectively, over the years, from the moment they meet to their time working together in the ’80s to their lives as 40-somethings in the early 2000s.
The show, which is based off of a popular book by Kristin Hannah, was an instant standout, leaving many fans to wonder if the show would return for a second season. Netflix kept Firefly Lane fans guessing for a few months, but then Heigl and Chalke shared the good news in a YouTube video: Firefly Lane has been picked up for season 2! While we don’t have all the details just yet, here’s everything we know about Firefly Lane season 2 so far.
When will season 2 of Firefly Lane be released?
The show’s leading ladies announced that the Netflix show would return for a second season in a YouTube video posted on May 26, 2021.

They couldn’t confirm a season 2 release date, but told Firefly Lane fans that “it’s going to be worth the wait.” What’s better, they said that “all of your questions will be answered” when the time comes. As of right now, it doesn’t seem like they have started to shoot season 2, which means it’s likely that the new season won’t air until 2022, a year after the first season’s launch.
Who will be in the season 2 cast?
At this point, we can assume that the entire Firefly Lane cast will return for another season, if it’s renewed. There’s a chance that there will be additions to the cast, but here’s who we can expect to see in season 2:
- Katherine Heigl as Tully Hart
- Sarah Chalke as Kate Mularkey
- Ali Skovbye as young Tully
- Roan Curtis as young Kate
- Ben Lawson as Johnny, Kate’s ex-husband
- Yael Yurman as Marah, Kate’s daughter
- Beau Garrett as Cloud, Tully’s mother
What has the cast said about season 2?
The cliffhanger ending has everyone talking, including the cast of the show. Ben Lawson, who plays Johnny, gave his take on what the thinks is next for his character — if he survives the bombing, of course. “All things going well, I think we’re going to see more of him and not just in flashback,” he told ET. “There’s a lot unresolved between Kate and Johnny as well, so we gotta get him home safe.”
Tully has some uncertainty of her own. In the final episode of the season, she walks away from her talk show, leaving many to wonder what’s next for Tully. “My dream of next season is that the two of them team up and create a new show for Tully that Kate produces,” Katherine Heigl explained to ET.
But when it comes to the obvious tension between Tully and Kate, Katherine and Sarah reassured fans that it has nothing to do with Johnny. “We can say that it’s family related and has nothing to do with Johnny,” Sarah revealed during the season 2 announcement. “Nothing,” Heigl echoed.
Are there any Firefly Lane season 2 spoilers?
As we all know, the final episode of the first season gave fans more questions than answers: Is Johnny dead? What happened between Tully and Kate? Are Tully and Max over for good? Plus, so much more to unpack.
If the show continues, season 2 will tackle these questions, using Kristin Hannah’s Firefly Lane as a guide. Showrunner Maggie Friedman has pointed out that some storylines stray from what’s in the book: “One of the things I think that’s been fun is that we have kept some big moments from the book and been very true to those, and then there are other things that we’ve done that are different,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
Even though the book’s ending is drastically different from the show’s, season 2 will continue to loosely follow the book, along with its follow-up release, Fly Away. Fly Away focuses on three women — Tully, Marah (Kate’s daughter) and Cloud (Tully’s mother) — as they try to pick up the pieces after a tragedy. The book’s description reads: “A single, tragic choice and a middle-of-the-night phone call will bring these women together and set them on a poignant, powerful journey of redemption. Each has lost her way, and they will need each one another — and maybe a miracle — to transform their lives.”
Regardless, Maggie plans to dig even deeper in the different decades of Tully and Kate’s friendship, specifically their high school years. “They’re only in eighth grade when we leave them. They’ll have a lot of good teen years and fun seventies, growing up times with the great music and the fashions and all of the cultural changes,” she continued.
