Kate Middleton coordinates Cambridge’s outfits to show ‘togetherness’ and ‘unity’

Kate Middleton coordinates Cambridge’s outfits to show ‘togetherness’ and ‘unity’

Kate Middleton, 38, has become a style icon all over the world for her classic looks. On several occasions, the Cambridge’s can be seen coordinating outfits and on other occasions, the Duchess will match accessories with Princess Charlotte’s outfits. Why does she do this?

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Stitch Fix Stylist Ambassador, Katie Eastwood, explained why it is important for the Royal Family to wear matching outfits.

The expert said: “Coordinating outfits is a great way of showing unity and togetherness for the Royal Family, whether it be matching kilts at Balmoral for the Queen and her offspring in 1972, or tonal hues worn by William, Kate, George and Charlotte on their 2017 Christmas card.

“Despite the family feuds of old that have kept many of us glued to our screens throughout The Crown, family unity is still an important display for the Royal Family, and what more effective way than in the clothes they wear?”

More recently, Kate and William can be seen outside of their Norfolk residence, Anmer Hall, clapping for the NHS during the first national lockdown.

On another occasion, Diana looked stylish in another Catherine Walker number, this time a pale blue coat and she dressed young William in the same boy’s version of the coat.

Another time Princess Diana matched with the Prince William and Prince Harry was when they were spotted looking smart in their Wetherby school uniform.

Diana matched the red piping detailing on their school blazers and ties by sporting a red jumper, red pleated midi skirt and red heels.

The stylist added: “Similarly, at the 2017 ceremony, Kate wore a stunning pink dress from Alexander McQueen whilst Charlotte wore a floral dress in the same colour.”

Last year, for the Christmas Day service, the Duchess matched with Princess Charlotte’s green coat by adding green accessories to her own look.

With this way of dressing becoming more popular, retailers have started to sell a range of pieces available in different sizes so that the whole family can match.

Katie explained: “There is definitely an appetite for mini-me styles and coordinating outfits between parents and their children, especially at family events such as Christmas and weddings.

“Although Stitch Fix does not serve children in the UK, some of our womenswear brands such as Boden offer really fun mini-me options, from Christmas knits to the classic striped tees Kate is so fond of.

“The trend may not always be executed with such elegance and style, but Kate never fails to dazzle with her own fashion choices and so the matching outfits are a win for me.

“The key to a lot of their looks is that they coordinate perfectly whilst wearing outfits that suit their demographic; Kate may be wearing a classic midi length dress in a rich royal blue from the likes of Michael Kors, whilst Charlotte matches in a floral dress of the same hue.”

With Princess Charlotte’s outfits, they tend to match head to toe, with hair accessories and shoes all matching the outfit colour.

The stylist added: “Often the execution fails when the look is too childish for the mother, or too mature for the child – a mistake Kate and Charlotte are yet to make!”
