Lidl: Discounter to introduce new features to its 50 stores opening this year

Lidl continues with its supermarket expansion and is on track for 1,000 more stores by the end of 2023. It forms as part of the discounter’s investment plans, including 50 stores opening this year alone, creating 2,000 new jobs.

This will be done via food banks or partner charities.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB said: “We are calling on developers and landlords up and down the country to help find potential sites for us to build Lidl stores, which demonstrates the continued ambition we have to further expand our store portfolio across the nation.

“Despite the challenges of the past year, we still managed to meet our ambitious target of opening, on average, one new store per week across Great Britain.

“We are looking forward to opening more stores throughout the country and welcoming new colleagues in the coming months and years, so that more communities can access high quality food at the lowest prices on the market.”

So far, Lidl has already opened more than 20 new stores across the country.

The supermarket hasn’t announced exactly where the new stores will be placed, but has instead outlined the areas of interest.

These include Brighton, Oxford, Bristol, Birmingham and Warwick.

Leicester, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff and Edinburgh are also of interest to the discounter.

Like many other retailers, Lidl has also pledged changes it will make to reach its reduction in plastic goals.

This includes reducing its own plastic packaging by 20 percent by 2022, and having 50 percent of its own label packaging to be made from recycled content by 2025.

By 2025, Lidl has said that 100 percent its own label packaging will either be recyclable, reusable, refillable or renewable.

It comes after supermarkets including Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have made huge changes in order to be more environmentally friendly.
