London hailed as Britons’ top 2020 staycation hotspot but Cornwall may take the 2021 crown

London hailed as Britons’ top 2020 staycation hotspot but Cornwall may take the 2021 crown

Amid the uncertainty of international travel in 2020, Britons in their masses switched their overseas holiday plans for a staycation right here in Blighty. Over half of Britons included in a new survey said “they only went on a staycation this year because they couldn’t travel abroad.”

Yet, according to an analysis by holidaycottages.co.uk, it seems one destination was crowned as the top holiday hotspot.

However, it may not be the seaside location one might envision when thinking of a traditional holiday.

The data found that London the most visited destination for staycations this year.

“It’s interesting to see that London was the most visited staycation spot, with younger people flocking to the capital for a break while they could this year,” said Shannon Keary, digital PR manager at holidaycottages.co.uk.

What’s more, around 30 percent of those surveyed said they had “always wanted to visit their chosen staycation spot, but had never considered it before his year.”

The top five destinations many holidaymakers flocked for the first-ever time this year include Northumberland, Cumbria and the Lake District, Snowdonia, Cotswolds and York.

Despite this, holidaycottages.co.uk found most people opted for familiar locations.

“This year has more or less cancelled all our travel plans, with Brits not being able to go abroad on holiday for the most part of the year,” said Ms Keary.

“However, our research shows the positive impact travel restrictions have had on the UK travel sector, with more Brits exploring the beauty of their country than ever before.”

It seems the success of staycations is set to continue in 2021.

Even with hopes of a vaccine on the horizon, many Britons are continuing the trend of UK holidays.

According to the research, around 84 percent of holidaymakers have already dreamed up 2021 plans.

Though London was crowned the ultimate staycation destination in 2020, it seems next year Cornwall is heading for the top spot.
