Mary Portas net worth: Queen of Shops has made fortune as UK’s leading retail expert
Mary Portas will appear on Channel Four’s Sunday Brunch this morning to talk about her brand new book Rebuild: How to Do Business Better, which was released this month. The TV star will speak to hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy alongside celebrity guests Aston Marygold, Samantha Womack, Alistair Brownlee, and Harry Redknapp.
An orphan at 18, Mary turned down a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in order to look after her younger brother.
The retail queen started her career in the industry by working a Saturday job at John Lewis, and later a full time job with Harrods.
She was responsible for the store’s window displays, before joining Topshop as a display manager.
Next, she worked as creative director at Harvey Nichols.
She also wrote a weekly column for Grazia between 2008 and 2010.
Mary’s TV career made her a familiar face around the country.
Since 2007 she has presented Mary Queen of Shops, Mary Queen of Charity Shops, Mary Queen of Frocks, Mary Portas: Secret Shopper, Mary’s Bottom Line, Mary Queen of the High Street, and What Britain Buys.
She also appeared on Channel Four’s Hotel GB in 2012 as co-general manager.
The retail consultant’s new book, Rebuild: How to do Business Better, is not her first book.
She has released four others since 1999.
Her first book, Windows: The Art of Retail Display, was published in five languages.
In her personal life, Mary was married to chemical engineer and Unilever executive Graham Portas for 14 years, until 2003.
They are parents to two children.
The retail expert later married wife Melanie Rickey and the couple currently live in Primrose Hill with the children.
They have a son together, Horatio, who was born in 2012.
