Meghan Markle 'uses royal status' as Kate 'abandons regal ways' in new videos - expert

Meghan Markle, 39, and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 38, have very different approaches to public life. As a senior royal Kate is bound to display a more formal front during public addresses while Meghan tends to towards a more personal approach. A body language expert has analysed and compared two recent speeches given by the sisters-in-law and shared her findings.

Meghan recently spoke out to honour those worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in a moving speech to mark the CNN Heroes awards.

In the new clip, Meghan praised “human spirit and the remarkable ways that communities respond in challenging times.”

Meghan’s latest video addressed similar themes to one made by Kate, Duchess of Cambridge just weeks before.

On November 29, Kate reached out to families and key workers to thank them for their extraordinary efforts over the past year.

The clip was shared on Kensington Royal’s Instagram account in a post which read: “Thank you to all the families, and parents, and carers, for the important work you do every single day in raising our children.

“And thank you to those of you working to support these families and their children too.

“What you do takes hard work, commitment and vision.

“It is a brave thing to believe in an outcome – in a world even – that might not be fully felt for a generation or more.

“But what you do isn’t for the quick win – it is for the big win. It is for a happier, healthier society as well as happier, healthier children.

“Only by working together can we bring about lasting change for the generations to come. Because I truly believe, big change starts small.”

The analyst said: “Here we can see her using some large, emphatic gesticulation and using her pauses and her vocal tone to add the passion to her points.

“She seems to have shucked off some of the previous restrictions of being a future Queen and become more committed and persuasive in her delivery.

“Like Meghan, Kate now uses her body language to sell her messages and to persuade her audiences.

“To do this she has slightly lowered her sense of royal status but upper her impact as a leader.”

On the flip side, Judi claimed that Meghan reverts to regal gestures during her latest address despite no longer being a working royal.

Judi said: “Meghan, interestingly, appears from this new appearance to be stressing her royal credentials.

“While Kate sits part-on to the camera, Meghan addresses it from the same front-on, ‘passport photo’ angle that the Queen might use to deliver an address to the nation.

“Meghan’s dress style is more traditional and formal here, with a pink silk blouse that Margaret Thatcher would have looked comfortable in and her hair pulled back rather than falling over her shoulders.

Judi added: “Meghan uses nearly no gesticulation here, delivering her message using subtle emotional cues from her facial expressions.

“Where Kate exudes firm motivation to action, Meghan is more about empathy, high-status elegance and quiet emotion.

Analysing Kate and Meghan’s varying use of language in each of the clips, Judi claimed Meghan favours “the soundbite” while Kate prefers “alliteration.”

Judi said: “Their messages of thanks are rather similar and both women now use verbal techniques to make sure they have a lasting impact.”

Judi added: “Meghan is still a fan of the soundbite but Kate appears to have picked up on the technique, telling us that ‘Big change starts small’.

“Meghan uses word repeats, like starting several sentences with ‘We saw…’ in a style that sounds political, but she also infuses her speech with emotive words and phrases that seem to almost bring her to tears as she says them, like ‘heartbreak’, ‘hug’ ‘devastation’ and ‘catastrophic’.

“Kate uses alliteration now, like ‘Happier, healthier…’ to stress her message professionally and her language here is actually harder-hitting compared to Meghan’s softer emotions.

“Kate uses ‘fight’ messages like ‘Harder-hitting’ ‘Brave’ ‘Quick win’ and ‘Big win.’

“Meghan appears to be keen to show her sympathetic, caring side here while Kate is more in fight mode, inspiring her audience to further action with her.”
