Michael Strahan’s Recent News Will Make ‘GMA’ Fans Super Excited

Good Morning America fans, coanchor Michael Strahan will continue greeting you during weekday mornings for the next few years.

After joining Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos on GMA five years ago in 2016, the 49-year-old NFL Hall of Famer has signed a new four-year deal with ABC News, according to Variety.

Since the former New York Giants star retired in 2008, he’s made a name for himself as a beloved daytime TV personality, starting with his time on Live! With Kelly and Michael with Kelly Ripa. Before departing Live! and arriving at GMA full time, he had lent his skills on the show as a correspondent, which led to a “request” by the network to switch shows.

“Over the past two years on GMA, Michael’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people, from veterans and all kinds of newsmakers to a host of modern American cultural icons … He will help us drive forward into a very exciting future,” president of ABC News, James Goldston, said in a statement.

Speaking with The New York Times Magazine in January 2020, Michael got candid about a challenge he faced when he began his new role on the morning show.

“One of the hardest things at first when I went to GMA was trying to figure out where I fit in, because … people will go, ‘He’s not a journalist.’ But journalism and the way news is delivered now is totally different from what it used to be,” he told the outlet. “Once I understood that people wanted diversity, and diversity in how the news is delivered, and that I fit that bill, I’ve been comfortable. There’s nothing I don’t feel I can do.”

After making the transition, the father of four has continued pursuing different projects beyond the small screen. In 2015, he added the title of designer to his résumé when he launched his clothing brand Collection by Michael Strahan at JCPenney. This evolved into his athleisure line MSX by Michael Strahan and later MSX by Michael Strahan for NFL with exclusive apparel.

What’s more, Michael continues to star on Fox’s NFL coverage as an analyst and has held onto his hosting duties for the game show The $100,000 Pyramid. Now, with years at GMA under his belt and more to go, the Texas native is showing no signs of slowing down. His incredible rise-to-fame story is currently being told on the ESPN+ series More Than an Athlete.

When Michael looks back at all he’s accomplished, he recently admitted to Forbes that he still doesn’t believe it.

“I never imagined really doing sports TV. It seemed somewhat foreign to me. And once I started doing that, I just kind of thought OK, this is where I will be and probably the only thing I will do on TV will be sports related. So now, to do what I’m doing, it just blows me away because it’s so unexpected, even for me.”
