‘Modernised, basic and plain’: Fashion expert on royal christening style and baby Lilibet

Rumours have circulated over where baby Lili is going to be christened, seeing as it is customary for royal children to be christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the private chapel at Windsor Castle.

Royal sources have said Harry is willing to wait until circumstances allow him to baptize his daughter at Windsor Castle.

Lili’s older brother Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was baptized at two months old on 6 July 2019 in Windsor Castle in a private ceremony.

This was the same for his cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Regardless of where Lili will be christened, all eyes will be on the style of those attending, particularly Meghan, and how baby Lili will look seeing as no pictures have yet been formally released.

Style commentators have always discussed the fashion at royal christenings, and baby Lili’s will be no exception.

Daena Borrowman, PR, Social & Digital Marketing Manager at jewellerybox.co.uk spoke to Express.co.uk about some of the royal baby christenings over the years.

“Since 1841 all royal babies have worn the same dress that was commissioned by Queen Victoria and Albert for their eldest daughter Victoria’s baptism.

“The dress was made of Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace – it was used for 62 royal christenings in total.

“More recently, in 2004 the Queen herself came to the conclusion the dress had become too fragile and so asked for an exact replica to be made, for future generations.

“This is the dress worn by: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and their cousin Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

“It’s thought the Queen’s private dressmaker travelled to Italy, with the original dress in her handbag to find the perfect lace for the replica.”

DON’T MISS:

So if baby Lili were to be christened out in California, it is unlikely she will wear the replica of Queen Victoria’s christening dress.

This will be a complete change from tradition and might ruffle a few feathers among the family.

Daena continued, “The royal wedding attendees often go for a more subtle look at christenings.

“Kate Middleton herself is known for wearing very plain white or beige coloured outfits at her children’s christenings.

“The royals also like to make subtle statements with their jewellery – the floral design white cluster earrings Kate wore at Prince Louis’s christening were duly noted.

“Whereas Princess Diana can be seen wearing a gorgeous pink frock and fascinator at Prince William’s christening, along with the Queen and Queen’s Mother wearing Navy blue and purple dresses.

“So although we see there is no strict dress code for the royal family to wear at christenings, it’s extremely clear that over the years the outfits have changed and become a lot more modernised, basic and plain.”

In 2018 during Prince Louis’s christening, some royal watchers criticised Meghan Markle for wearing an olive green dress instead of the more customary whites and pastels worn in recent years.

However, it is clear that over the decades the Royal Family have worn many different colours to christenings, so technically any colour could be worn to Lili’s christening.

Daena added, “Lastly, we would say blue is a staple colour for the royals and although new members of the family might be adapting their fashion to the current social landscape, the queen often stays true to her roots and can be seen on many occasions still rocking the navy blue or bright coloured dresses and suits.”

If the Sussexes wait until Lili is the same age as when Archie was christened, then she will be baptized in early August.

A christening in the UK might go some way towards mending the relationship between the couple and the rest of the family, and it also will mean the Queen will be able to attend.

It would be Meghan’s first trip back to the UK since March 2020.
