Phillip Plein Men’s Spring 2022

Never mind the burning palm trees, the dancing skeletons, the dragons wriggling in the air and the KennyHoopla and Travis Barker track “Hollywood Sucks” that all feature in Philipp Plein’s digital film to showcase his spring 2022 collection. The Swiss designer is deeply in love with California and has been since his first trip at age 14, when all he dreamed about was seeing Mickey Mouse.

Plein once again conscripted 3D visual artist Antoni Tudisco to create a psychedelic metaverse, this one patrolled by a cartoon skeleton character in blimp guise, and featuring a CGI version of the heavily tattooed Barker banging on the drums.

No matter that the collection was designed before he and Tudisco settled on rock music, fringe-faced party people and settings that ping from pools and forests to robot labs: The brightly colored shorts, hoodies, camp shirts, bathrobes and tube dresses – splashed with loud logos, pineapples, studs and cartoonish prints – somehow felt right at home in this bonkers universe. Plein summed up the collection as “comfortable clothes,” though they certainly aren’t quiet.

Over Teams, Plein said he’s had fun pivoting from mega runway blowouts and parties to anything-goes fantasy films. “We can create whatever we like in this digital world. There are no boundaries,” he enthused.

Indeed, his spring film highlights every spike on his first sunglasses by Italian eyewear manufacturer De Rigo, which reveal themselves when Daft Punk-like helmets dissolve to reveal human faces. Elsewhere, skater shoes slide out of the mouths of metallic skulls, while high-tops hover over coiled snakes.

Spurred on by Tudisco, Plein said he’s working on his first NFT drop, while also edging back into the real world, divulging that he’s plotting a rave for Milan Fashion Week in September, health conditions allowing, and a Halloween party at his new house in Bel Air. Hollywood sucks? As if!
