Prince George and Princess Charlotte Take on a Key Role at the Queen’s Funeral
As world leaders descended on London to bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace announced on September 18 that Her Majesty’s great-grandchildren, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, would also be in attendance at her funeral, following the Prince and Princess of Wales up the nave of Westminster Abbey. The children will join the royal family at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, during the private committal service this afternoon, too—although whether they will take part in the latter procession is still to be decided.
Royal pundits had been divided about whether or not the Prince and Princess, aged nine and seven respectively, would be present at the funeral given their young age. Prince Louis, whose classic four-year-old antics delighted the nation during Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend, will remain at home throughout the day.
The Queen enjoyed a close relationship with George and Charlotte, who referred to her as “Gan Gan.” Her Majesty nodded to their births in her Christmas speeches in 2013 and 2015, respectively. “For the new parents, life will never quite be the same again!” she announced following George’s arrival, while she happily celebrated Charlotte joining the family a few years later. “One of the joys of living a long life is watching one’s children, then grandchildren, then great-grandchildren, help decorate the Christmas tree. And this year my family has a new member to join in the fun.”
Various senior advisors were reportedly particularly keen to have George at the funeral, given that he is now second in line to the throne. The Princess of Wales previously revealed that George is the only one of her children to really understand his great-grandmother’s passing fully, and that he is just now beginning to realize her importance in British society. Louis, meanwhile, offered up a sweet thought, which Kate shared with mourners at Sandringham: “At least Grannie is with great-grandpa now.”
