Sainsbury’s, Asda and Waitrose shopping rules amid Christmas rush

Supermarkets have seen lots of changes this year including reducing the number of customers in stores and implementing deep cleaning methods. With Christmas just around the corner, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Waitrose have extended their opening hours and are reducing queues through their virtual queuing apps.
With the festive period an extremely busy time for grocery stores, supermarkets have introduced a number of measures to help keep customers and staff safe.
Sainsbury’s
First introduced back in July, supermarket giant Sainsbury’s rolled out an innovative virtual queueing system in a bid to help reduce queues.
The free app called Ufirst is available free to download on mobile devices.
It is available in 55 Sainsbury’s stores where customers can scan a QR code and are notified when it is their turn to shop.

Waitrose
Upmarket supermarket Waitrose also uses an online queuing system to help manage the number of customers entering the stores.
Qudini enables shoppers to book a shopping time slot remotely.
Customers are able to book a slot at more than 100 Waitrose stores to help prevent long queues in the lead up to Christmas.
Steven Hand, head of customer experience at Waitrose, said: “We’re doing all we can to make our customers’ grocery shop as safe, easy and convenient as possible.
“Our pre-bookable slots are just another way we’re doing this and will give peace of mind to those who like to plan ahead and avoid queues.”
In the lead up to Christmas, most stores will also be open until 11pm with a select number of convenience shops open until midnight.
Asda
Supermarket giant Asda has been trialling Qudini which also notifies customers when it is their turn to shop.
With the colder weather setting in, shoppers now don’t have to queue outside in the cold in order to get into the supermarket.
Customers without a smartphone can ask a member of staff to be added to the virtual queue, and will be alerted when it’s their turn.
Some Asda stores are now open 24 hours and the supermarket giant website reads: “To find out your local store opening times please visit our store locator.”
Other supermarkets including Tesco have also introduced extended opening hours to help shoppers pick a quieter time to pick up groceries.
The grocer also introduced a traffic light system in most stores to help regulate the number of shoppers in-stores at any one time.
Discount retailer Aldi also has this system which indicates when shoppers can enter the supermarket and when they must wait outside.
