Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s body language shows ‘close’ and ‘relaxed’ bond with the Queen

Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s body language shows ‘close’ and ‘relaxed’ bond with the Queen

Looking at photos of Sophie, body language expert Judi James analysed the royal and provided an insight into what her body language shows.

Judi explained: “Sophie’s body language yesterday had the air of a corporate wife whose husband has just received a long overdue promotion at work.

“There was a vast gap in the Firm’s line-up as the top tiers royals stood flanking their Queen like chess pieces in The Queen’s Gambit.

“Timothy Lawrence wasn’t there beside Anne but, most importantly, Prince Andrew and Harry and Meghan were out of the game, possibly for good, which led to Edward moving up to act in the kind of ‘favoured son’ role that his brother used to take.

“We can see Edward showing an air of what looks like excitement, walking briskly up to the steps with his hands balled into fists and then leaning out from the line-up to catch the Queen’s eye when she does appear.”

The royals chatted with the Queen while Edward was half way up the steps and Sophie remained at the bottom.

Judi added: “He even goes up onto his toes and down again a couple of times in a gesture of happy impatience.”

Sophie remained calm at the bottom of the steps with her hands together.

“She must know she has a very close and relaxed relationship with the Queen and now is the time when that relationship is more visible, thanks to the fact that she and Edward are no longer eclipsed by the Sussex’s and the Yorks.

“Sophie’s hand-clasp as she stood beside Kate in the line-up was a self-handshake, a clasp that involves the gaps between the thumbs and the forefingers being pressed together.”

Throughout her time within the Royal Family, Sophie has attended various events and engagements as well as performed speeches.

This no doubt has boosted her confidence and Sophie’s hand-clasp gesture last night is “a very comfortable, confident and slightly self-contained-looking gesture,” according to Judi.

The expert added: “It was interesting and possibly symbolic that it was Sophie who led the clapping when the band finished playing.

“This move would suggest a quietly solid but dominant role, someone who knows all about the formalities and has read the programme of events in advance.

“Clapping first is always a sign of confidence and leadership and the other royals did seem to take her lead.

“Sophie’s smile also looked more relaxed and authentic than her more excited-looking husband’s. She seems to know that she doesn’t have to try to hard now, and possibly that her sense of quiet, calm authority will help Edward during this leap-frog up the ranks.”

Despite the visible gap between the couple on various occasions, the expert said that this “did seem to be down to Edward’s keenest to get over to greet his mother”.

Judi explained: “The couple still chatted together using facial expressions of fondness but it looked as though Sophie accepted that this was her husband’s moment and so stood back slightly to watch his beaming facial expressions with some element of pride.”
