Tesco and Asda latest supermarkets to ban shoppers who refuse to wear face masks

Coronavirus restrictions have tightened in supermarkets as the pandemic continues. Tesco and Asda have shared an update on wearing face masks in stores.

Tesco

The supermarket giant has released a statement explaining it will not let shoppers in unless they are wearing a face covering.

Tesco has also encouraged customers to shop alone if possible.

Doing this can help limit the number of people in a store and make social distancing easier to follow.

DON’T MISS

A statement issued today said: “Since the start of the pandemic, we have focused on ensuring everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment.

“To protect our customers and colleagues, we won’t let anyone into our stores who is not wearing a face covering, unless they are exempt in line with government guidance.

“We are also asking our customers to shop alone, unless they’re a carer or with children.

“To support our colleagues, we will have additional security in stores to help manage this.

“Our colleagues are working hard in difficult circumstances to make sure everyone can get what they need, and we’d ask everyone to please be kind, patient and respectful as we all work to keep each other safe.”

Asda

Asda has explained shoppers will be given free face coverings to wear in stores if they do not have one to hand.

These will be provided by colleagues at the entrances of stores and all visiting the store is expected to pick one up if they do not have their own.

Those who still refuse to wear a face covering and are not exempt will not be allowed to enter the store.

An Asda spokesperson said: “If a customer has forgotten their face covering, we will continue to offer them one free of charge.

“But should a customer refuse to wear a covering without a valid medical reason and be in any way challenging to our colleagues about doing so, our security colleagues will refuse their entry.”

Supermarkets have regularly updated shopping rules during the coronavirus pandemic.

Changes have been put into place to help keep customers and colleagues safe during the pandemic.
