Vogue Criticised for Casual Kamala Harris Cover

U.S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris poses for Vogue in Converse sneakers. Tyler Mitchell for Vogue.
Vogue’s February cover featuring US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris wearing Converse sneakers sparked debate among fashion critics and on social media. By printing the casual image as its cover rather than a more polished portrait of Harris in a blue suit (reportedly the option preferred by Harris’s team) Washington Post’s Robin Givhan says the magazine effectively “called her by her first name without invitation.”
Vogue’s cover story specified that the green and pink background of the portrait shot by Tyler Mitchell was intended as a tribute to her Howard University sorority, the historically-Black Alpha Kappa Alpha.
