The email claims to be from the NHS and asks for people to apply for a ‘Digital Coronavirus Passport’. Police are urging people to be cautious of the email and others like it that may be circulating, especially noting the risks of clicking any links in them and giving over any personal details.

As reported by Devon Live, it contains a link which takes you to a fake NHS website, where it then asks for personal information and payment details – allegedly for an admin fee.

The website also included information on who is apparently eligible for the passport and how to obtain a physical certificate.

Its circulation has prompted police to warn people to beware of the email scam and others like it.

In February, a similar fraudulent Covid email was sent to some UK residents, telling people they had been selected for a jab “on the basis of family genetics and medical history”.

They then had 12 hours to respond in an attempt to rush the recipient into giving over their details.

Katherine Hart, a lead officer at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, said scammers “pivot to theme their scams according to whatever is in the news”, adding that “Brexit-themed scams are also taking hold”.

Ms Hart urged people to tell friends and family that they should be wary of such cons, but also that they should report their occurrence to put a stop to them.

She added: “I cannot overstate how important it is to report scams, as this provides vital intelligence to the police and other agencies, and speeds up the process by which fraud networks are taken down.”
