‘Yellowstone’ Fans’ Hearts “Skipped a Beat” After an Instagram Post Sparked Season 4 Questions

In Paramount’s hit drama Yellowstone, a promise is a promise, and no one exemplifies that more than John Dutton (Kevin Costner) himself.

With fall just around the corner, fans are waiting to hear when season 4 of Yellowstone will finally premiere. After all, it’s been almost a year since season 3 wrapped up. Understandably, when the show’s official Instagram page posted a nine-second clip of John this week, folks immediately perked up and thought they were getting a glimpse of the new season.

But upon closer inspection, the snippet is actually from the eighth episode of season 3 entitled “I Killed a Man Today,” which originally aired in August 2020. For context, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) had just approached her father with the offer made by Willa Hayes (Karen Pittman) and the Market Equities — a whopping half a billion dollars for land that didn’t include the ranch. Despite discussing why it would benefit the family to take the generous offer, John did exactly what Beth predicted and shut the idea down.

He then reminded her about the promise he made to his own father, John Dutton Sr. (Dabney Coleman). John vowed he would never sell the land, even going so far as to say that he would rather be forced to give it up than make a deal.

“I made a promise and I’d rather lose it than break it,” John said in the video.

Since the moment was first seen last summer, John’s words have become a memorable part of the show. That said, while fans love seeing the character with his signature cowboy hat, many still flooded the Instagram comments section with questions about season 4.

“Every single time y’all post a video, my heart actually skips a beat!” one person wrote. “When is the new season coming out??!!” another added. “Can we get an air date!!???!?” a different fan said. “Stop teasing us!!!!!” a follower commented. “This better be the best dang season yet as long as it’s taking to come out!” someone else quipped.

On July 1, Paramount gave viewers hope that new Yellowstone episodes are on the horizon after releasing a season 4 trailer. Although the minute-long clip featured scenes from season 3, it revealed that the new season would premiere sometime this fall. Shortly after, Deadline reported that there’s talk about a return in early November. But this info is yet to be confirmed.

Until then, we’ll just be here re-watching John’s best moments and keeping our fingers crossed that Yellowstone will be back before we sit down for our Thanksgiving dinner.
