Dilip Kumar’s fans offer funeral prayers at his ancestral home in Pakistan

Cinestar Dilip Kumar’s death on Wednesday caused much grief around the world. The legendary actor’s death was mourned by everyone from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Condolence messages have continued to pour in with innumerable people mentioning how Dilip Kumar was more than an actor. Dilip Kumar was born Muhammed Yusuf Khan in Peshawar in 1922. The area is now in Pakistan and funeral prayers were held for the matinee idol at his ancestral home there. “Peshawarites came out to express their grief and sorrow on the demise of their most famous son. Funeral prayers were held in absentia at his ancestral home in the Muhalla Khudadad area of the city. This area has recently been acquired by the Provincial Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to convert into a museum in memory of the late and great Dilip Kumar,” said writer Talat Rahim to ETimes.

“The legend, along with his wife Saira Banu, had visited this area, and in a moment of sheer joy and exuberance, had performed the area’s dance Khattak,” she added. Dilip Kumar’s death was mourned by the top leaders of Pakistan along with many celebrities from the country who praised the actor and called him an inspiration. Rahim also thanked the Indian government for giving the actor a grand state funeral saying: “We are really grateful that he got his due respect.”

Throughout his life, Kumar was the recipient of many honours including the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The actor also holds the distinction of being the first recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Male) and holds the record for most wins in that category. Kumar is also the only Indian to be conferred with the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award in Pakistan. Dilip Kumar’s pathbreaking film with the ethereal Madhubala, Mughal-E-Azam continues to be one of the highest grossing Hindi films of all times, when adjusted for inflation.
