Maureen Lipman talks coping with heartache over partner’s death by working, like the Queen

Coronation Street actress Dame Maureen Lipman has spoken of her initial thoughts following the death of her partner earlier this year. Maureen returned to work shortly after the death of Guido Gastro, admitting she couldn’t sit around.

The actress, 75, who was made a Dame by Her Majesty The Queen in her birthday honours for services to charity, entertainment, and the arts, instantly returned to work after her partner Guido passed away aged 84.

Maureen says she found her strength was similar to the resilience the Queen showed in April following the heartbreaking death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who died at Windsor Castle aged 99.

Her Majesty returned to work 10 days after the Duke’s death, hosting a video audience with the ambassador of Latvia and continues to keep a full work schedule.

Guido, Maureen’s partner of 13 years, sadly died in January 2021, and at the time she admitted that her “heart is cracking”.

“We don’t know how he got it or when or if he had it when he got the vaccine,” she told the Daily Mail.

Her devastating news came after Maureen announced her return to Coronation Street after taking “sabbatical” leave until she had been fully vaccinated.

While the actress has now received both of her jabs, she admits that filming for the ITV soap has been dramatically altered in light of the pandemic, but the acting is “incredible”.

She said: “We are still having to stand three feet apart, we can’t pass a cup to one another, we can’t take a drink if someone has touched it, we can’t kiss someone. It is impossible, yet somehow yet the standard of acting, not always, but mostly, is incredible.”
